Blues Have a Ball in Treble Win
Duke of Gloucester Napier City Rovers completed the season’s treble by adding the Hawkes Bay Premier Knockout Cup to the silverware cabinet.
The Blues defeated Red Steel Marist 8-0 in the final of the competition, ending their glorious, unbeaten, season in style.
In boss Stu James’s maiden campaign in charge, the exclusively undefeated side have claimed the Computer Care Pacific Premiership and lifted the Federation Cup, as well as the HB Premier Knockout trophy.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that they have won a sensational, successive 23 out of 23 games.
Chris Bruin opened the scoring in Saturday’s final at Bluewater Stadium in the first 10 minutes, with captain David Gearey firing in his shot to double the lead inside 20 minutes.
With a 2-0 lead at the break, the Blue Army inside the stadium were hoping for more action early in the second-half so they could get celebrations into full swing. And, a confident Blues side emerged through the tunnel determined not to disappoint, and finish the season on a high note.
Dan Ball went on the rampage, delighting supporters by netting an astonishing double hat-trick to take the score line to 8-0 and get the treble party started.
It’s been a sensational run for the Blues side, who NCR Chairman Russell Booth says have ‘brought the atmosphere’ to the club this season.
Coach Stu James says he was never in doubt his men would complete the treble task.
"We came out in the second-half, a team full of confidence, and got the job done," said James after the match.
"23 [wins] out of 23. I've never seen it done before. What an achievement."
The bar is set high for next season.
