Trial Date Set: Bill Robertson looking for new players to bolster Central League side. Napier City Rovers are opening up their recruitment process for their Central League team this year by hosting a trial game for potential players. Bill Robertson, Rovers head coach, says by opening up the trial process he hopes to tap-in to a wider pool of talent, either locally from within Hawke’s Bay or from around the country, to strengthen the club’s high performing Central League side. “By holding a trial it will be a lot easier for people within the Central Region, or from across the country, to get involved. Our aim is to give as many players as possible with the ability to play at Central League level the opportunity to showcase their talent," says Robertson. “While we have already secured some key signings, we are looking to bring in some quality New Zealanders to bolster our squad.
“The change to the eligibility rules is putting extra pressure on the regions, especially areas like Hawke’s Bay. With a constant flow of young prospective talent moving out of the area for university, or for scholarships in America, like we seen last year with Ross Willox, we need to recruit players from outside the region to merge with the best players we already have available to us locally. “We have some good talent coming through the Rovers ranks, with some of our players from last year’s Central League squad gaining National League experience throughout the summer with Hawke's Bay United. Our focus will remain strongly on youth development despite the fact we may actually lose players when they get to a university age. The Napier City Rovers Academy and our youth pathways play a pivotal role in developing players, but we also need to cast our nets wider to make sure we can be as strong as we can be.” The Blues boss said the players in focus for this year’s trials would be high quality performers with the capability of playing at the highest level of club based football in New Zealand. The trial game has been confirmed as Tuesday, February 27, 6pm at Bluewater Stadium, Napier. Players from across the country are encouraged to register.
